Archaeology Update

The final excavations have now been been undertaken at the former North Worcestershire Golf Course by Worcestershire Archaeology, in advance of its redevelopment by Bloor Homes.

These investigations have demonstrated the role the former golf course played during the Second World War, when a series of features were built as part of the defences during the Battle of Britain. The image shown is of the brick base for an anti-aircraft gun emplacement. There are records of barrage balloons and a searchlight battery having been located within the boundaries of the site; the balloons would have forced aircraft to fly above a certain height, and in conjunction with searchlights would have forced the enemy aircraft into a particular flight path when the anti-aircraft guns would have been employed.

The excavations have helped our understanding of this former gun emplacement and they will be detailed in an Archaeological Evaluation Report to be prepared by Worcestershire Archaeology and submitted to Birmingham City Council is due course.
